Buy 10 Pro OEM for $128 (rather than pay $99 for an upgrade through the Windows store so I have a copy of Home on hand which you know will come in handy some day). Try to put in the new product key to do the upgrade. Get error 0xC004F050. Call Microsoft and find out that I need to do a clean install to get Windows 10 Pro.

You do HAVE to do an upgrade from Win 7 or 8.1, however once that’s done you can do a full format and reinstall (as long as the hardware isn’t changed). The upgrading seems to be needed to link the old key with the new Windows 10 licence. I’ve done that twice already and both are 100% fresh installs now and fully activated.

If you have a 10 OEM key then it will pick it up from the UEFI, otherwise it will ask for either a license key or Microsoft account to activate. As for using the Windows 7 VL or a 7 OEM, the free upgrade period is long over so you should look at getting the correct Windows 10 license for the machine. Thank you!

Next, hit the Start icon then open Settings directly. Or, hit Window and I keys to open it via shortcut. Opt for the Update & Security section and select the Activation tab at the left and then click Change product key in the Activation tab. Finally, go in the Windows 10 Pro OEM key and hit Next. The Windows 10 Pro will be activated automatically.

The answer is no. Users upgraded from an activated copy of Windows 10 do not need a product key to upgrade to Windows 11. While upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11, you will not be asked to type the 25-digit product key.
